how ARE THE

  CHILDREN?

If the children are not well, none of us are truly well.

Community - This is a call to action for the well-being of our children, families, and future in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County.

The phrase "And how are the children?" originates from a greeting used by the Maasai people of Kenya, one of the most respected warrior cultures in Africa. In this tradition, the health and safety of the community is measured by the well-being of its youngest members. The customary response, “All the children are well”, reflects: life is in balance, the village is strong, and the people are living in alignment with their responsibilities to one another.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE MARCH?

Our Children Are a Collective Responsibility.

This moment calls for more than awareness. It calls for participation, connection, and shared commitment.

We each have a role to play in building a community and the conditions where every child can thrive. This means we shift our investment toward a child wellbeing economy.

GET INVOLVED

Summer after dark

Summer After Dark is a series of free events for kids and families this summer, ensuring our children have safe spaces and places to be children and be joyful. Planned by neighbors. Built by community.

There are three major events, along with smaller gatherings across

the city. Everything is by us, all of us.

Everything is free.

OUR PURPOSE

How Are the Children? exists to call us back to one another.

We believe that the well-being of children is the clearest reflection of who we are as a community. When our children are not safe, not supported, not free to thrive, it is not their failure - it is ours.

This work is rooted in love, accountability, and the understanding that care must be collective. We gather, organize, and act to build a community where every child is held, every family is supported, and no one is left to navigate alone.
